Curriculum and successful experiences with EFL teachers
Teaching
English in Ecuador dates to 2010, the year in which English was taught from 8°
EGB to 3 ° BGU. Since 2016, a new curricular reform was implemented in order to
improve the quality of education at the national level and starting from the
early age, from 1st EGB. During this presentation you will be able to know the
chronological data and general data of the foreign language curriculum and its
application within educational institutions nationwide.[MJM1]
Teaching is something that many teachers can do, but the main goal
of teaching is to generate learning. If you as a teacher, are only interested
in teaching, you should pay attention to what we are going to discuss, if you
are interested in both: teaching and learning, you’ll probably see this as a
tool for taking your students to the highest levels.

Throughout this plenary, I’ll share some of my experiences of

and some other digital resources, can generate learning in students, not only
local but also global, contributing with the development of the countries and
improving people’s quality of life.

Times have changed, methods have changed, why teaching
can´t? We cannot longer consider the traditional way of leaning and teaching
English as the only and probably the most consistent way to achieve knowledge.
Our young and not so young students have a new perspective about images that
come to their minds, things are moving faster, sounds are growing and media has
helped to this revolution, therefore a classroom, a board and even a book are
no longer the best option when it comes to teach English. I want to put on the
table another option: You Tube. I want to demonstrate that this new option
works and can be applied even in regulars and traditional schools with theories
such as THE WHOLE CLASS (Kolb) that implies students to come to class with a
previous knowledge prior the topic that would be taught ( no homework). This is
just one of the many examples about the advantages of using You Tube in class
and of course using it to re inforce information or even self-taught classes.
On my speech I will give examples and also I will tell my
story about the experience of a virtual English teacher to try to convince the
audience to take YouTube Classes as valid as classes in the classroom.

FINAL ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION
CLT in the National EFL Curriculum
The imperative need to improve the level of EFL in the
Ecuadorian education system came with the responsibility to choose a
methodology that would provide a small margin of error. CLT (Communicative
Language Teaching) gave the means in order to find the proper mechanisms to
channel EFL in daily lesson planning, focusing on the production skills which
traditionally had been left aside.
Proposal:
The current requirements of educators, education and
learners demand that language learning be seen as part of the communication
process. The learner is interested in
using the language and the educator must administer the content
(“Can-do-statements”) in a way that becomes engaging and useful to her
students. At the same time, production has traditionally be planned as the
second stage, and in many cases, production has been seen as a secondary aspect
of the learning process. To overcome
this perception and to face the current challenges, the curriculum was designed
under the CLT (Communicative Language Teaching) methodology.
In this presentation, the audience will see how CLT allowed
the curriculum to link the what, how and why of the language

What do we think about when we hear
the word technology in the classroom? Is it the use of a computer? Or the use of
a digital board? Is it allowing our students to do research with their phones
in class? In reality it is all of them, even when we started using cassettes
players and pushing TVs into the class back in the day. But why have we stopped
improving?
We upgrade our TVs, our cars, our
smartphones; yet do not upgrade our classes and teaching methods. This is not
to say that our previous ways were wrong.
It means that we can always expand and become better instructors and to
have a better outcome with our students.
Technology has helped teachers from
being able to make photocopies of the test, to having test generators, and now
even having automated testing allowing teachers to save the marking time and
spend it more effectively in class. As well as having better reports for our
students and providing customized study paths.
Technology also helps teachers to
reach out to students on a ground they feel more comfortable in by using
videos, forums, chats, webquests, games and other activities. These provide
students with practice not only challenging but also allowing them to use the
grammar and vocabulary learned in a more meaningful way, thus learning how to
use it in context.
Fortunately
we live in a digital era were we all have smart phones tablets or computers, if
not all 3 of them, at home. And internet access is as cheap as 25 cents in a
cyber. Sometimes we are reluctant to change, until we do. Then it becomes just
natural. I believe we are in the frontier where teachers can use better tools
in class as well as having students access to them without it at home without
having limitations. We just need to learn how to implement these correctly

Teaching and learning don’t only
happen inside a classroom, they can be taken anywhere; why not to take them to
the digital space if we’re living in the digital age? YouTube, as well as many
other digital platforms, is available and open to the world, why not to use it?
It is here to help us enjoy teaching and learning.
My main objective is to share some of
my experiences using YouTube as a tool for teaching ESL by applying Vygotsky’s
ZPD concept to generate learning, and also to show some strategies and
resources that can be used for teachers and students to complement the class,
to follow, and to assess the teaching and learning process.
As teachers, our commitment is not
just to teach, it is about helping students achieve their learning goals to
better their lives, for that reason, it is important to be with them in their
process, to understand them, to guide them, to show them the road, to think
like them, to know them, and in other words, to do anything it is at our reach
for them to learn, and if it is not at our reach, our job as teachers will be
to find out what else we can do for them, and YouTube can be part of the plan.

Traditional
teaching
Marking a language teaching method as
"traditional" totally means that it is discarding, and possibly not
being taken into account in some way so to speak. For years, traditional
approaches are considered "grammatical translation" and have been
discredited because they do not develop students' communication skills.
However, these traditional orientations continue in some way and in some
contexts. In a number of classrooms where English is taught as a foreign
language in different countries that persist some elements of these traditions,
mainly those that are more guided by the teacher or focus on explicit
explanations of grammar, vocabulary and memorization.
There is a current hypothesis that the dominant purpose of
learning the English language is social, professional or economic. In the case
of students, English as a foreign language is a requirement subject that meets
the growing demand to communicate in this language to obtain a better education
or employment opportunities. It should also be mentioned that the student also
feels the need to communicate in a foreign language such as English for the
interaction and objectives of social life with native speakers of this
language. However, it should be noted that with traditional teaching students
must develop their thinking through the learning of analytical skills in
working with grammar; his knowledge of other peoples and cultures and his
sensitivity to humanity through reading.
While communication skills are now prominent worldwide,
these other major educational goals of learning English as a foreign language
(academic, cultural and humanitarian) have not disappeared, they are still of
crucial importance in educational institutions, although they can manage in a
much more interactive and conscientious way.
